Master's degree thesis oral examination and departure process


【For International Students Only】

Master's program students are required to pass the "department review of thesis topic and research objectives" before one semester prior to the deadline for degree examinations. Failure to complete the review as required will result in ineligibility to apply for the oral defense.

※ Reminder: Before submitting your application for the oral defense, please ensure that you have: 1. Completed the course requirements (passed at least 24 credits), 2. Passed the Thesis Relevance Verification, 3. Passed the Academic Research Ethics course.

  • Please go to the "Student Information System," link to "Personal Information" → "Thesis/Dissertaion and Advisor Information System" to enter your thesis information and print the relevant forms: 6.Examination Application Form, 7.List of Committee Members, 8.Qualification Form by Master’s Degree Examination Committee, 9.Master’s Thesis Recommendation Form, 10.Form for Final Oral Defense, 11.Graduate Student Thesis Academic Ethics and Authentication of Originality Statement.

Oral Defense Application

  • Oral defense period for each academic year:
    Fall (1st) Semester: October 1st to January 31st of the following year
    Spring (2nd) Semester: April 1st to July 31st
  • Please fill out the online Master's Thesis Examination Checklist for our institute.

  • Please prepare the "Examination Application Form," "Master's Thesis Examination Checklist for our institute," "List of Committee Members," "Master’s Thesis Recommendation Form," and "Official Transcript of Records" and submit them to the department office two weeks before the oral defense.
    (If the qualifications of an oral defense committee member do not include being a current or former assistant professor or above at a university/college or an assistant research fellow or above at Academia Sinica, they must meet the criteria of "holding a doctoral degree and having significant academic achievements" or "whose research field belongs to a rare or specialized discipline and having significant academic or professional achievements." In such cases, please also attach the student's "Explanation Form for Meeting the Appointment Standards of Our Institute" for review.)
Preparation Before Oral Defense
  • Before the oral defense, students should use the Turnitin plagiarism detection system provided by the library to complete the thesis originality comparison and submit the thesis draft "Originality Comparison Report" to the advisor and examination committee members for reference on the day of the oral defense.
  • The principle for thesis similarity comparison in our institute is no more than 20% without applying any filtering conditions. For detailed information, please refer to: Regulations for Graduate Student Thesis Originality Comparison.
  • Please be sure to upload the electronic file of your thesis draft "Thesis Originality Comparison Report."

On the Day of Oral Defense
  • Please go to the department office first to collect the "Oral Defense Fee Receipt Form" and the "Master's Thesis Examination Checklist."
  • The thesis draft "Originality Comparison Report" needs to be provided to the oral defense committee members for reference.
  • The "Form for Final Oral Defense," "Qualification Form by Master’s Degree Examination Committee," "Oral Defense Fee Receipt Form," and "Master's Thesis Examination Checklist" need to be graded and signed by the oral defense committee members.
  • If you need to requesting an "Embargo on Printed Theses and Dissertations", please submit the "application form" and "certification documents" for review and signature by the oral defense committee members.

After Completing the Oral Defense

  • Within five working days:
    Please return the "Master's Thesis Examination Checklist" and "Oral Defense Fee Receipt Form" signed by the oral defense committee members to the department office.
  • After obtaining the advisor's approval:
    1. Please return the "Master’s Thesis Recommendation Form," "Qualification Form by Master’s Degree Examination Committee," "Form for Final Oral Defense" and "Graduate Student Thesis Academic Ethics and Authentication of Originality Statement (please fill in the percentage of the completed thesis)" signed by the advisor and oral defense committee members to the department office.
    2. Please upload the electronic file of the final thesis "Thesis Originality Comparison Report."

  • After the "Qualification Form by Master’s Degree Examination Committee" is signed by the director, the department office will notify you via email to pick it up. Only after receiving the signed Qualification Form can you upload your thesis to the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology's Digital Lobrary of Theses & Dissertations System.

School Leaving Procedures

  • Please go to the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology Library's Digital Thesis and Dissertation System to upload your full thesis (website: https://etheses.lib.ntust.edu.tw/thesis/). You can download two copies of the thesis authorization form after the library reviews your thesis.
  • Please go to the "Student Information System," link to "Personal Information" → "Leaving Processes for Graduate Students," log in to fill out the survey, then download and print the paper school leaving procedure form. Follow the instructions on the paper form to complete the leaving procedures:
    1. Department Office: Submit two softbound copies of your thesis. The cover color should be light orange stone pattern paper (color code S307).
      (If applying for postponed public access of the paper thesis, please "enclose (do not bind)" the approved postponed public access application form and supporting documents.)
    2. University Library: Submit one softbound copy of your thesis.
